I am one to love summer for the long haul. Maybe it’s because I always picture winter in New York as this one memory from the early days of living here. I’m walking on West 10th between Hudson and Greenwich. It’s overcast, no snow, everything is bare and the wind is whipping up from the river in such a way that it takes your breath away. I am chilled to the bone and wondering how many more layers it would take to combat this incessant river wind. That limit does not exist.
Even on the hottest days, which can be equally as unpleasant there is a sweet spot each morning when the light is just right and the city hasn’t yet come to a boil that is blissful. The quiet is a different kind than the wintery, it’s too cold to be outside quiet. There is a sense of calm ahead of the day that I can’t get enough of. This all being said, the latest heatwave, which is supposed to break any moment now, has me dreaming of fall. I want nothing more than to pop on a cozy knit and sit beside an outdoor fire. Funny to have fallen into this mindset so early. I’m definitely feeling conflicted as I add things here and there to the beginnings of my fall shops.
So to get myself back into the mindset of summer, I’m placing my focus today on the season-less. It’s been a minute since we’ve had a chat about home things. Now feels like the perfect time. We recently broke one of the last of the little blue and white bowls we got when we first moved uptown. There was a set of four and a set of two, both from Anthropologie that I loved. They had acquired various chips and dings over the years, for which we think the rocket ship of a dishwasher in our old apartment was largely to blame. And finally most of them were lost to tumbles off of counters or accidental drops they could no longer withstand. We have a few left and one has a crack in it. Needless to say, I have been keeping an eye out for replacements.
I’m looking for something on the smaller side — think a cereal or dessert bowl, very simple in shape/design, and has an element of color. But, I wouldn’t be opposed to something neutral in color with a more fun design either.
