Trending: The Puff Sleeve

As I sit here scrolling through the Shopbop sale, I find myself saving the same style top over and over again, a puffy style sleeve that reminds me of both every Disney princess and the 1980s. The puff sleeve trend has been building over the last few years and is something I have seen a lot more of recently. Last summer I dabbled a little bit with it, picking up two tops that sort of fit into the category but in a more subtle way. This season it’s in full swing and I’m considering embracing the trend as there is very clearly going to be a debate once we get to the checkout point where I will need to narrow down my options. That being said, I thought it might be helpful to round up a few of my favorites and talk through the selection process.

I have been eyeing this A.L.C. top for years after seeing it pop up on Elizabeth Chambers’ Instagram stories a while back. I’m always a fan of a good white tee and one with a twist is a great way to add a little something extra to an everyday staple. I personally am drawn to the simplicity of this top. The puff sleeve adds a sweet twist without being over the top and can help dress up what might be a more casual look when paired with jeans.

Similar to the A.L.C. top, this one from Free People follows a similar theme in subtly. The sleeves are a little bit more full and dramatic, but have a nice drape. I also love the sweet pointelle detail and mock neck. This top could easily be dressed up or down and is at a much more friendly price point than the previous one!

Now for a more dressy version. The print on this La Vie Rebecca Taylor top is just gorgeous and the layered detail on the sleeves adds an interesting twist. Trends are fun to experiment with, but when your overarching style goal is to create a wardrobe that will work for you for years to come, it’s important to keep in mind how that style will feel over time, especially if you spending more on that piece. Since the sleeves are a little more toned down on this top, I think it could be worn well after the trend fizzles out.

Moving on to this Moon River ruched sleeve top. I love this print, the style is very on trend, and the price point is great – especially with the sale! My only hesitation is regarding the ruching on the sleeves. In my opinion, this is a true trend piece. It looks adorable online and will most likely be in style for a little while but the ruching will definitely date it once puff sleeves stop being the thing to wear.

Finally, this Cinq a Sept top is pure fun with its romantic sheer sleeves and and square neckline. It would be a fun thing to pair with jeans for an easy date night look.
