Recent Reflections on My Personal Style

We have been in the process of buying our first house and moving for months now and it has brought up a lot of thoughts and conversations around my wardrobe and personal style.

I have never had more of the urge to clear things out and part ways with the pieces in my closet that are no longer serving me. You know me, I collect and collect and hold on to things forever. I love that about my wardrobe, I love that last year I was wearing a silk midi skirt I wore in high school that is now perfectly on trend again. The silk skirt in perfect condition is not the issue. The issue is the pile of things I never ever reach for and cannot see myself doing so in the future.

I strive to invest in things that are as timeless as they can be. But what happens when some of those things need to be retired for good? I have been talking about streamlining for a while. A move sounds like the perfect time to do so as I have been forced to go through everything I own and reevaluate.

JD and I have been talking a lot about how my lifestyle is going to change moving out of the city. I am still going to want to dress up now and then, but my day to day will be more casual. Honestly, I have been dressing for this lifestyle since the pandemic hit. I want to be put together but comfortable. Sneakers have become my go to choice in footwear. I wear leggings most days, especially through pregnancy and postpartum — they are a staple.

This week I have been trying to unpack my closet and sort through what I have so I can reevaluate what I am missing and what I am ready to part with and I am weirdly excited about the latter. My closet already feels so much lighter. I feel lighter too.

I have had a lot of clarity as I have started shopping for a few spring and summer pieces. The things on my list at the moment feel needed and intentional — a new pair of jeans, a lightweight jacket, a raffia tote.

I heard somewhere recently that if you are okay with buying an expensive dress for a special event that will be worn once but not investing in the things you wear day to day your priorities are out of order. I think that is an excellent reminder as we move into this new season of life. I find myself wearing the same few pieces over and over again and have been for years. We have talked before about elevating basics and that has been a priority of mine over the last few years. Hearing this was really reaffirming that I’m on the right path, albeit a much more casual one.

A few pieces that have caught my eye—
