Bump Style: My Approach to Getting Dressed While Pregnant

* This post was written on April 20 *

My approach to styling the bump has been largely focused on keeping things simple. My goal from the beginning was to wear as many pieces from my closet as possible and as luck would have it, I have been able to stretch most of my wardrobe throughout my pregnancy. I did however pick up a few new things to liven things up and treat myself here and there.

As far as sizing goes I have always been a fan of the oversized. I’ve mentioned this before, but most of my sweaters have been purchased in a size up for years because I like the way they lay better when tucked up or in and I’ve never been a body con girl, so my tops and dresses tend to either skim or be more on the floaty side. Another perk has been working from home so I have had the ease of throwing on my beloved align leggings with a sweater and calling it a day all Winter long, which has been a blessing.

Now that I am at the very end of my pregnancy I wanted to round up some of my favorite looks that I’ve shared over on Instagram and LIKEtoKNOW.it over the last months and chat a little bit about them. Coincidentally they are all dresses, which comes as no surprise since they are such an easy staple and excellent layering piece during the colder months and especially during the transition of seasons.

First up is this sweet sage colored check maxi dress, which is a recent purchase. The weather lately has been so nice and I have loved pulling out some of my Spring clothes and testing the waters to see what still fits or can be made to work like a button down open over a tank. I snagged this dress during a sale and paired it with a denim jacket and comfy slides for a recent spin around the neighborhood. One note on sizing – it runs very large. I ordered a size small thinking it would be a better fit for the bump and that I wouldn’t mind it hanging a bit looser post baby but should have ordered an x-small because it is very stretchy and roomy.

This Amazon find has been a real champ throughout my pregnancy. As soon as I found out we were expecting I knew I wanted to buy a classic fitted black dress to snap weekly photos in to track my progress. I found this one and eventually at 14 Weeks had enough of a “bump” to start. It was a real struggle through the beginning of my pregnancy as I waited for that baby bump to become visible to the outside world, let me tell you. I would look at photos on Instagram every week and get upset that I was nowhere close to how “everyone else” looked. It wasn’t until somewhere between weeks 25 – 26 that I finally “popped” and had a visible bump without the assistance of food. I had to remind myself often that everyone and every pregnancy is different and that comparing yourself to others is never the way to go.

This dress is an oldie but a goodie from H&M that I have worn on repeat for the last couple of years. It is just so easy to throw on and go, has a mock neck, and when not pregnant skims the body in just the perfect way so it doesn’t cling to anything but doesn’t look bulky either. These days it’s much more of a body con dress on me, which I kind of prefer at this stage.

I am always a fan of a good sweater dress. This one fits very loose so it is also my regular size, but I wish I had sized down in it. I wore it mostly early on when there wasn’t much to be seen and think it will fall better post baby in a smaller size. The plan as of now is to try belting it next Fall/Winter to style. It really looks so adorable with tan knee high boots though!

I really really wanted to wear overall shorts while pregnant, I think they are so adorable and have a pair on my Summer wishlist in general. Being that I was only pregnant for a small portion of the summer and the pair I was eyeing was sold out in my size I settled for a tweed pinafore dress during the Fall/Winter instead. I love the shape and button detail on this one and took my regular size. Here I styled it with a white tee, which felt very reminiscent of Rachel Green from Friends.

I am always a huge fan of a little white dress and creamy Winter whites just might top my list. I picked this easy ribbed dress up during a fall sale and wore it in steady rotation all season. It’s meant to be a little on the loose side so it worked perfectly with a little extra padding courtesy of the growing bump and has been such a fun addition to my closet.

And finally, the black turtleneck dress. I bought this dress for our baby announcement photos we shot back in November at 16 weeks. We have come a long way since then and this dress has stretched along with me quite nicely. Here I am at 24 weeks, which I think was actually New Years Eve now that I think about it. I really love this dress and plan to wear it a ton in the future. It hits at such a nice length and as previously mentioned is quite stretchy and forgiving. I ordered it in a size up so that it would hang a little looser when not pregnant since I don’t tend to love figure hugging numbers as much. It’s so funny how much your style preferences can change during pregnancy. I have been all about body con dresses lately. Anything loose is just not as flattering in my eye right now.

All of these pieces are linked up below but being that some of them are a bit older they may no longer be available.
